ESI has extensive experience operating in both Antarctic and Arctic environments.

In Antarctica, this has included supporting luxury expedition travel operations and developing the capability of expedition staff through practical training and assessment programmes.

Areas of instruction and support have included:

• Glacier travel
• Crampon and ice axe skills
• Snow and ice anchor systems
• Belay techniques
• Polar campcraft
• Crevasse rescue
• Self-rescue techniques
• Emergency procedures
• Incident response and management

This work has also included advising operators on operational standards, risk management practices and safety systems designed to support safe and sustainable operations in one of the world's most remote environments.

Additional cold weather and Arctic experience has been gained through extended periods operating within the Arctic Circle, including glacier travel and crevasse rescue training on the Finse Glacier in Norway.

Extensive experience has been gained operating in mountain environments throughout the UK, Europe, North Africa and the Himalaya.

This includes leading commercial expeditions and supporting teams in remote mountain regions where weather, altitude, terrain and limited infrastructure create significant operational challenges.

This experience includes expedition planning, leadership, logistics, emergency response and incident management, including coordinating helicopter rescue operations in remote mountain terrain.

Extensive experience has been gained operating in arid and desert environments over a number of years.

This has included prolonged periods living and working in remote desert regions and participating in complex operations requiring detailed planning, self-sufficiency and resilience in extreme climates.

The challenges associated with heat, isolation, logistics, communications and resource management continue to inform ESI's approach to remote operations planning and risk management today.

Experience operating in tropical rainforest environments includes extended periods living and working in remote jungle terrain in Southeast Asia.

These environments demanded careful management of environmental hazards, movement through complex terrain, self-sufficiency and effective team management under physically demanding conditions.

The lessons learned in these environments continue to shape ESI's understanding of expedition planning, human factors and operational resilience.

ESI's operational experience extends beyond land-based environments.

This includes extensive experience at sea, ranging from expedition cruise operations in Antarctica to long-duration ocean voyages and remote maritime operations.

This experience provides valuable insight into the unique challenges associated with operating in isolated maritime environments, including weather, logistics, communications, emergency response and self-sufficiency.

In 2014, Gav was a member of the fastest eight-person team to row unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean from Gran Canaria to Barbados.

Spending weeks at sea with no external support provided a unique perspective on resilience, teamwork, leadership, fatigue management and decision-making under prolonged physical and psychological stress.

The lessons learned through endurance challenges such as this continue to influence ESI's approach to leadership development, crisis management and performance in demanding environments.

Collectively, these experiences span every continent and a diverse range of operational environments, cultures and challenges.

While every environment is different, the principles required for success remain remarkably consistent: sound judgement, effective planning, capable people and the ability to adapt when circumstances change.
